"Evelyn, just leave it," Gary said.
His secretary dropped what she was doing. "Are you sure, because ..."
"I'll handle all of this. You get yourself to safety."
She nodded then left his office, as Gary opened his safe and pulled out a bunch of papers and put them in his briefcase.
Suddenly, he heard a gunshot and stopped what he was doing. "Evelyn?" he called out. He looked down at his briefcase, then closed it. And then he cautiously left his office.
He looked around the corner and saw his secretary lying on the floor, bleeding from a gunshot wound. "Evelyn? My god, what happened?" he asked, crouching down next to her body.
"Well, well, well. If it ain't my old friend Gary Fiennes," he heard a girl say.
He looked up and saw her standing nearby, looking down at him. She didn't look familiar to him, so he wasn't sure why she was calling him an old friend. He had a momentary idea that maybe she was one of the swapped people, but that was soon disposed of. He wasn't sure how this girl could be anything other than herself. It suddenly seemed ridiculous that she could be one of the swapped people, even though it was entirely possible, since everyone else in town was completely susceptible to this phenomenon. Of course, it was Vic's wish that was causing this mental conflict within Gary's mind.
"Who are you?" he asked the teenage girl, then noticed the gun in her hand. An idea flashed in his mind that this girl had shot his secretary. But then he thought that was silly. This girl couldn't hurt a fly, even though he knew nothing about her. Again, it was Vic's wish that caused him to think this way.
The girl smiled. "I'm your executioner." Then the girl held up the gun and pointed it straight at his head. And all the way up to the moment that the bullet burrowed through his brain, he knew that this girl couldn't hurt him.
She was such a sweet innocent girl.
